Here are some simple gas saving tips to help you get better gas mileage.
With today’s soaring gas prices it’s now important than ever to learn how to get better gas mileage. In return, you will save money by stretching your visits to the gas station.
Simple Gas Saving Tips:
- Get a tune-up
- Check your tires
- Change your oil regularly
- Wash your car
- Change driving habits
- Fill up tips
- Lighten the load
- Unnecessary Idling
Tune Up - If your gas isn’t burning efficiently because of:
- Dirty spark plugs
- Dirty air filter
- Dirty fuel filter
You’re basically wasting gas. Your car engine won’t be able to burn the gas effectively and in order to keep the engine running, it requires more gas to go through the system.
Tire check - If your tires are slightly deflated, it’s causing drag or your car needs to work harder to keep it moving. Properly inflated tires should be one of the first and easiest things to resolve. It will also help your tires last longer.
Oil change - Changing your oil regularly helps the engine run smoother. The less friction there is, the better your gas mileage will be. Think of it this way - can you swin faster in water or mud?
Car Wash - Don’t laugh, every little bit helps. By reducing the drag on your car, the engine doesn’t have to work as hard. Your gains will be minimum so you’ll need to weigh it against the actual cost of a car wash.
Driving Habits - If you have a heavy foot, it’s costing you money. Every time you accelerate too quickly you are burning more gas (money). If you are trying to keep the person next to you from cutting in front of you, then who really wins? Not you, because it’s costing you money.
If you need to accelerate so you can cut in front of someone… well, you’re losing money. Anticipate traffic and position yourself in advance so you don’t need to suddenly accelerate. You’ll also be reducing “road-rage”.
Fill Up - Fill up when it’s cooler. Since gas is more dense when it’s cool, you’ll get an extra cup of gas for the same price.
Use a popular gas station. If the gas station doesn’t get alot of visitors, their gas can become contanimated. So your mileage will suffer along with your engine.
Don’t let your tank go below 1/4. Unless you do off-road driving, the sediment (junk) in the gas will sink to the bottom. If the junk starts flowing through your fuel system, then your fuel filter will need replacing more frequently.
Avoid filling up immediately after the station has been refilled. All the junk that was floating on the bottom will be floating throughout and right into your gas tank.
Lighten the load - The heavier you car is, the harder it is to move it. So if you use your car as storage, it’s costing you money.
Idle time - Try not to idle for too long. If you’re sitting in a drive-thru, shut off your engine. Don’t however, shut off your engine on the freeway or in traffic. Doing so may cause you panic when the traffic starts moving and can lead to an accident. Newer cars don’t need a long idle time to warm up, so about 30 seconds is all you will need. If it’s cold out and you just want to warm your engine so the heater will bow warm air… well, it’s costing you money.
